Sometimes I think I should call this blog “A Thing of Gluten Free (and everything else Kelly’s allergic to) Beauty”! If you’ve been a reader for a while, you’ll know that about a year ago I had to go gluten free plus start avoiding six other foods I found out I was allergic to (thanks, sudden onset adult allergies) and the whole world stopped for about a month…until I figured out how to start falling in love with food again. I always encourage people I meet who ask me about my odd diet to try out going gluten free – there’s so many health benefits and it’s never as difficult as people think, especially in this day and age! Here’s what I think all people who are interested in going gluten free:

It doesn’t help you lose weight
I’ve been gluten free for exactly a year now and guess how much weight I’ve lost…none! In fact, I would say I gained a pound or two. Gluten free foods typically don’t contain much less calories or sugars, they just don’t contain any gluten proteins.
You can still go out to eat
…and get something that’s not a salad! It amazes me because a year ago, I would have been hard-pressed to find a restaurant that I could comfortable eat in but today, totally different story! Some of my local favorites in Michigan are Kruse and Muers, Streetfood 2491, and Mod Pizza and nation-wide are Noodles & Company, The Melting Pot, and anything that sells sushi, basically!
It is a little bit expensive
I’m not going to lie, avoiding gluten is not for you if you’re on a budget. It can be done…but you’ll be eating a lot of salads. If you have it in your area, Trader Joe’s is a fantastic resource for delicious gluten free foods on a budget.
There’s a difference between choosing to go gluten free, having a gluten sensitivity, a wheat allergy, and Celiac’s disease
I have a gluten sensitivity, similar to how some people are lactose intolerant and it’s something you can’t be tested for – it’s basically a conversation you have with an allergist to determine if your symptoms qualify. That’s much different from a wheat allergy, which is an immune system reaction to wheat proteins that you can be tested for. Then there’s Celiac’s disease which is a serious condition with serious reactions to gluten.
Gluten free items don’t taste the same as gluten-filled items
Don’t be fooled – going gluten free is not an easy choice to make. They taste similar but you can always tell that something’s missing…
You have to check the ingredients on everything
This is why grocery shopping takes me 2+ hours! Gluten hides in things you never expect so I check everything, just to be sure.
“Flourless” doesn’t necessarily mean gluten free
I see this a lot with cakes in the gluten free section at the supermarket. Just because it doesn’t have flour in it, doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to be gluten free. Gluten hides in other ingredients and it’s important to double check to be sure.
Food envy will become a real problem
Wait, did someone say going without gluten is easy? Hah! I can’t tell you how many times I look at people eating regular cake and wishing I could have just a bite…
Raw foods will be your new best friend
Gluten free cooking can be a little tedious and complicated and if you’re anything like myself, you’ll say screw it and start eating a lot more raw foods (sushi, anyone?)
You can still enjoy foods
This has been a real goal over the past year for me, is to really fall back in love with foods. At first, I was really depressed every time a meal came around because I thought it would be thick and flavorless. But that’s not true once you really embrace gluten free cooking and learn to fall back in love with delectable foods.
